For a stretch one of my kids had sports practice across town first thing in the morning once a week, so I'd take him and drop him off and go to the McDonald's across the street and get a little bit of egg and sausage and a cup of black coffee and read a book. It was empty. It was always empty. I thought back to when I was a kid and when I'd have to push aside the small golden tin ashtrays to the edge of the table and the place was always bustling, with styrofoam cups this time and with brown floors, and how old men in gray sweaters with holes in the sleeves and gray whiskers and WWII veteran caps would lounge about for hours, scraps of paper beside them and maybe a Bible, chatting with each other. How mom would bring in two toddlers and a baby in a stroller and they'd get Happy Meals and the toddlers would race the cartoonish cars along the tabletops. How it was a social place to be present. Now, I sat alone for an hour, with my cup of coffee, sipping, reading, occasionally looking at the old man on his 6:30 am routine of mopping the now-pristine floors of the soulless postmodern remodel, how occasionally the door would open and close as someone would pop in to pick up a meal, how there was no longer any ring of a cash register, and no longer even a human being to take your order, just large glowing panels you'd silently watch and touch and touch and watch. But I came every week anyway, and I drank and I read and I remembered.

cr, my local McD's got an "update" and now it's like a giant walk-in vending machine. No cashier, all employees in the back, and you only interact with them through the shelf where they put your order.
I'm often the only non delivery driver there.
3 small tables in the front, the rest is just a waiting lobby.

Was thinking today how we used to go to pizza hut with other families after sports tournaments, and everyone would sit down and talk and play.
My mom used to go with her friends for lunch regularly, and they would often sit down at a burger king or whatever and the kids would play or color and the middle-class to affluent moms would just sit in a burger king and eat.
Now these places are for recovering heroin addicts only.
At best normal people might go through a drive through and have the food handed to them before they go home to look at their screens.
At worst, the poeple look at their screens, go to another screen to order for someone else to go to the restaurant for them, then only stop looking at their screens for the 10 seconds to pick the order up from the porch.

One of the few places on earth that is 100 percent enhanced by technology reducing your interactions with other “human” beings.
Do you actually miss intermixing with the felons and illegal aliens “serving” you from behind the counter?

You are wrong but you're correctly diagnosig the problem.
There used to be cheerful teens behind teh counter.
Now it is all illegal aliens - so people stopped going.

Dude could be a poaster if he dropped some hair
Those kiosks are about 5-6, so that's spot on
No wedding ring, no companions
Look of confused misery on his face
We're practically brothers

I always think this is the logic of a dumb person.
If you raise the minimum wage from $15 to $20, then this only applies if the cost of the touch screens is exactly between $15 and $20 an hour - the odds of which are extremely low.
In practice they probably cost $1,000 to manufacture- meaning even at $10 an hour they'd replace a worker in about 1 week give that they can "work" 100 hours a week.
Machines will almost inevitably replace people once they are capable of replacing people. They will not replace people where they cannot replace people (look at self-check out going away because it doesn't work - not because it became more expensive or labor became cheaper.
The min wage has almost nothing to do with it.
