Why are last minute plane tickets with little passenger demand so expensive?

Shouldn't it be part of "dynamic pricing" that when a plane has only sold 50% of its seats, the remaining seats should come down in price? I am looking at tickets from a smaller city airport to a large hub, and I guarantee you it will be 30-50% full based on previously haven flown this route, yet if I want to buy a ticket for the next day its $400. For the same route months in advance you can get a ticket for $90.
What sense does this make? it can't be because everyone would just wait until the last minute to try to get cheap tickets. that would quickly correct itself as there'd be no cheap tickets at the last minute.

cr.
airlines dont want to encourage people to wait and buy last minute tickets at deep discounts. these kikes would rather seats sit empty than give you the hope
