Baseball is the only game in town, it’s poor, but most importantly, kids can sign pro contracts when they’re teenagers. So Jorge is taking BP and grounders at short for 8 hours a day while Birdshit Braden has to sit through Algebra and English Lit.
Also once they’re signed the team pays for everything, you don’t need to have UMC parents shelling out thousands for gear and fees. |

From the age they can walk, boys are playing some kind of stickball. The one game I saw all the time in the dirt streets, icr the name, but the pitcher chucks the cap of a laundry bottle and the batter uses a broomstick. The plastic cap flutters like a motherfucker, almost impossible to make contact. They do this all day, every day, from like age 4.
Anyone with any talent - and genetically many of these rural rice-picking blacks are direct descendants of slaves - is immediately lionized in the village, and nationally. They are taken from their homes and sent to live in a baseball academy around age 12, where they play and are coached for around 10 hrs a day.
a mlb team can then sign them for like 50k, own them as prospects, and that is more money than anyone in the village has ever seen, ever. |
