When British India was partitioned in 1947, eastern Bengal became East Pakistan — part of the new Muslim-majority state of Pakistan, despite being geographically separated from West Pakistan by over a thousand miles of Indian territory. This arrangement proved deeply dysfunctional. West Pakistan dominated politically and culturally, suppressing Bengali language and identity.

This led to the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, in which East Pakistan broke away — with Indian military intervention — to become the independent nation of Bangladesh. So Bangladesh's path to nationhood required two independence struggles: one from Britain in 1947, and one from Pakistan in 1971.

The Legacy

British colonization left Bangladesh with infrastructure and institutions, but also with the scars of the 1943 famine, the economic drain of extraction, and the consequences of the rushed 1947 partition — a border drawn in five weeks by a British lawyer (Cyril Radcliffe) who had never previously visited India.
