There's a pretty wide gap between "isn't going to be perfect" and colossally fucking retarded.
It would have reasonable for Trump to announce his tariff goals alongside a realistic timeline for implementation (say 12-24 months) so businesses (particularly small business) would have a chance to plan and adapt.
Going on TV and announcing that effective immediately everything becomes 50%+ more expensive is just preposterous and ruinous to businesses that don't have a trillion $ in free cash or a direct line to the highest levels of Congress or the Executive. To say nothing of the fact that Trump can go out tomorrow and announce additional tariffs on imports because "muh feelings"

the reliance on globalism is what caused the great recession and the economic fallout from COVID when we didn't have the capacity to generate for ourselves enough supply to meet demand.

I voted for Trump three times and these tariffs are one of the dumbest policies I’ve ever seen in politics. The only possible sense it makes is to try to grab some quick bucks to help reduce our deficit. But there will be lots of unpredictable pain randomly distributed through the economy and the uncertainty is terrible for businesses (not to mention the stock market), and may linger.
With that said, the economy can probably adjust to this within 18-36 months and I think the long term impact will be relatively low. Americans aren’t ready to be europoors who have to buy shitty substitute goods.
