definitely a big leap, the biggest between generations for sure, but I feel like going online for legit multiplayer was more of a shock to me. It seemed like the very nature of games had changed. You were really able to compete with anybody

The actual single player game of Half-life was probably played through to completion at the same rate as a COD campaign. Also I’ve never played “deathmatch classic” iirc. It came into its own with Team Fortress imo. It’s a seminal Game in western PC canon though bc it’s more adult. Instead of just killing demons you’re a scientist (Engineer) who shows up to work like an Adult before killing aliens. The game was made by Nerds, for Nerds, and you play as a Nerd. Mass-shooting vibes (going after authority figures such as soldiers), rather than the school shooting vibes of Doom.
