90% of violent crime is confined to certain areas. Downtown Birmingham is dead past dark and not exactly family/tourist friendly, but Southside and surrounding areas have restaurant's, bar's, et cetera and is pretty well lit and patrolled afaik. As a teen I hung around the five points fountain and went to many a punk rock, Hipster, Emo, Goth, and even a Creed show in various local areas. As an adult, I Scout all manner of Filming locations all across the city, and have had nary an issue with Crime. Just keep your eyes peeled and you will be fine.
One thing to keep in mind imho regarding Birmingham's high crime rate is that there are several suburbs very fuckin' close to Birmingham that in some other metro areas would be a part of the principal City. But here - they are not. If you were to add the people of Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Hoover, and unincorporated Jefferson County near the city limits of Birmingham to the mix and account for their crimes and population, the overall crime rate would come down imho.

Trussville is just a tad isolated at the northeast corner of town, so traffic is a bitch IMHO. Pros: It's newish, solidly middle class, has some great areas and their schools are decent. While there's an older downtown, the large majority of it is new construction. There are some nice new shopping centers. Alas, growth is largely uncontrolled and is turning into a nightmare imho. Spend time in traffic on Highway 11, Trussville's main drag, at rush hour, add three-five years of heavy growth, and I think you get the idea - particularly if you commute to Liberty Park. JMO, YMMV.
