The loss of communities that contained all social classes is the main problem

The wealthy used to be a part of the community, in relatively close proximity and more social interaction with the lower classes. They were probably just as greedy on average as the wealthy today, but they also wanted to be well liked by the people. Back then, that meant giving charity to the people in your community and not starving children in Africa. It also meant funding buildings and infrastructure for common use.
With improved travel and communication, communities started to get more concentrated by class, and farther from each other. I think this is what led to the communist vs. capitalist battle. The wealthy will always be outnumbered, but instead of being on an island having to make peace with their fellow inhabitants, they've built their own island and use their money and political influence to protect themselves and sow conflict among the lower classes and races.
I know this sounds kinda commie, but my entire point is that communism wouldn't have a good boogeyman to attack if the wealthy didn't feel hermetically sealed off from the unwashed masses

>use their money to sow conflict
this feels lazy. aggression is a homo sapiens default setting, one that served us well. if anything rich people try to steer poors away from actual violence towards sports betting and whatnot.

Disagree. I think what the elites as a group fear most is a populist movement among the lower classes aimed at them. The French Revolution, Communism, even Occupy Wall Street. They know that we're never far from hard times and poors and middle class(both liberal and conservative) uniting in their rage against the wealthy. The best protection against these movements is to never let them unite. Create racial conflict, social issue conflict, gender conflict, etc. Whatever it takes to not let them unite and start electing populist leaders.
And if it looks like they're on the verge of uniting, World War
Edit: and I agree that bread and circuses are a way to keep proles docile and uninterested in politics, but that dam will always burst during hard times, and the energy has to be redirected
