that will still buttfuck biglaw. most biglaw firms have 12-15 offices or whatever. they're in nyc, dc, la, chicago, miami, then there'll be a random city like austin or seattle. biglaw is full of people who (like me) practice before federal agency/ies whose enabling statutes have preempted state law.
if everything gets left to the states, biglaw firms are going to to have to open offices all over the place, or make sure their lawyers get barred all over the place so they can dispense advice on state statutes and participate in state admin proceedings, etc.
also, like half the states would probably have zero regulation (this may or may not be made up by uber-shitlib states like CA or NY).
i think you raise a good point that there is a good amount of federal regulation that, if it disappeared, would be replaced by state regs, but i don't see how the current biglaw model would survive the gutting of the federal leviathan.
i wonder how it would be in practice if all regulations were left to the states. some stuff would probably be a total clusterfuck.

"practice before federal agency/ies whose enabling statutes have preempted state law."
Right. So what creates more work? A bunch of state laws or one fed law?
"if everything gets left to the states, biglaw firms are going to to have to open offices all over the place, or make sure their lawyers get barred all over the place so they can dispense advice on state statutes and participate in state admin proceedings, etc."
Does that sound like more legal work or less legal work?
"also, like half the states would probably have zero regulation (this may or may not be made up by uber-shitlib states like CA or NY)"
Now consider that most businesses will be doing business in a large number of states or all 50 of them and will have to craft strategies to deal with that.
"i wonder how it would be in practice if all regulations were left to the states"
It also wouldn't be everything. They're not gutting the SEC, for example. There are still international sanctions and massive federal spending initiatives.
I will note that a lot of that stuff has been increasingly handled in-house anyway. But as a senior in-house lawyer I'm not worried at all.

my overarching point is that this would possibly end biglaw as we know it.
to give an extreme example, look at cravath. they aren't going to go from having offices in nyc and dc to offices in nyc, dc, north carolina, mass, ct, etc etc etc. and most of the other biglaw firms have a larger but more limited footprint. not sure how some of these firms would continue to operate if there was a patchwork of 51 jurisdictions they needed to have people barred in/know the law of, etc.
i have no idea what would happen to biglaw, but i'm sure it wouldn't look like it does now.

Because there's more corruption shit that went on and which you don't know about and they're trying to protect themselves from future investigations by getting on Trump's good side.
And it's not just Paul, Weiss. Word is that there's going to be some explosive discoveries that will come out at some point. Could take down a few major firms and people arrested.

The partnership is full of laterals from Kirkland, Weil, Cravath etc. Which part of the brand do you think they care more about?
1. Does big deals and cases, 5M+ PPP, good relations with powerful people.
2. Hosts a great Kamala Harris fundraiser and gay marriage.
