What would you do? He’s never played lacrosse in his life. Pretty uncoordinated but generally strong and athletic. Total goofball, but just wants to be with the cool kids.

Kind of tempted to let him try, but he’s actually good at soccer so bummed to watch him give it up. He also says he’ll stop bugging us about playing tackle football (hard no) if we say yes to lacrosse.

why can't your kid play tackle football? you get nearly as much brain damage from heading ball consistently over a number of years. Lots and lots and lots of people played high school football and are completely fine. some of us even had...*gasp* a concussion or two!

I’d be okay with in in high school but the kid is in 4th grade. I have no confidence in youth football coaches. We live in a nice suburb and the coaches are great (I hear) but what happens when they play some LMC town coached by guys whose whole personas are filled with being youth football coaching legends?

if you'd be ok with it in HS then we have no beef. but don't be so classist. also, i don't follow your comment. some johnny redneck pee wee football coach is going to be instructing his 9 year olds to target your kid's head, spear him, etc.? that's not possible in practice and they would just be encouraging their own kids to get hurt

Yeah but anyone can play high school. If you're good enough to play college+, it's about size and or athleticism way more than "skill."

football relies almost entirely on athleticism (i.e. strength, speed, quickness, agility) as opposed to skills that have to be learned at a young age.

you make a pretty definitive statement as opposed to offering some thoughts and asking for reaction so I'm going to call you out a little.

1. how would you know? did you ever play organized football at any level?

2. you're wrong. offense especially line play is almost entirely footwork, muscle memory and technique. you would know this if you knew the feeling of running a route or run blocking. defense is more about athleticism and reaction but there is still some element of positioning and learned footwork

3. yes, football has the strongest, most explosive athletes, but to say it relies purely on athleticism suggests you don't know anything about how the game is actually played

You’re right in that “almost entirely” in my post is hyperbole.

“Footwork” isn’t a skill. It’s coordination and athleticism. I played soccer, so I had good footwork which translated to tennis and basketball despite my never having really played competitively until high school.

I was able to play backyard football with kids who played on teams and was better than most of them because I was fast.

You can’t do that with soccer. If you don’t develop a touch by age 10, you never will. There is no scenario where even the most athletic person kicks a ball for the first time at age 14 and becomes a good much less a great player.

If possible, let him try both, but don't discontinue soccer altogether. If he's at a high level "academy" that expects him to commit only to soccer, maybe take a step down to a less competitive team that practices once or twice a week as opposed to 3 or 4.

That said, if he genuinely dislikes playing soccer and you think he's mature enough to make this kind of decision, then maybe respect that and let him steer the ship.

If your son is good at 10 years old because he's athletic but doesn't love soccer, his development will stagnate and he will be just an average player in a couple years. The kids who become elite players will kick a ball around all day if you let them. Maybe trying lacrosse will help him realize how much he likes soccer.

If you're playing baseball at Amherst, very low chance your dad is worried about cutting the checks

Starting at 5 years old the kids are observed and sorted based on their skill level and athleticism. The stratification really takes form at U8 where you have town rec, town travel and then private academies. Each academy has between 2-4 teams per age group. The coaches are absolutely ruthless and have no problem benching a 1st grader if they think it will help the team win.

With this background it’s almost all smoke in mirrors and marketing bullshit. After each academy’s first team, the rest of the players get treated like shit and are there just to create revenue for the club while ignorant parents pay to be affiliated with what they believe is something elite.

It’s probably just as popular as basketball and doesn’t weed kids out based on size. Basically there’s a larger pool of very good players than in any other sport.

In NJ alone, there are hundreds of travel teams in each gender and at every age. This is on top of town rec programs and unranked town travel teams.

Soccer is gay. Let him play with his friends.

If you want to do what is best, push him towards the sport he is genetically most suited for.

If he’s good at soccer, he’ll also be good at lacrosse.

What are you and your wife most suited for? Start there

For example, I played football and ran track in HS because that's what my friends did. I was athletic enough to compete at HS varsity level, but not enough to pursue in college. Based on my 6'2"/180 frame and other attributes (like vision, hand-eye coordination, endurance >>>>> speed), I should have focused on swimming, rowing, baseball, tennis, or even lacrosse. I'll push my son towards baseball.

i think those days are over. there are so many kids who play soccer now and high level training from a young age that to stand out you can't just be skilled and a decent athlete. you have to be an elite athlete. This isn't just something I've noticed.

Lax remains a niche sport for privileged white kids. For the most part, the smaller ones aren't athletic enough to play soccer and the bigger ones aren't athletic enough for football.

Aren't most lacrosse players fat and live off their parents? But maybe that's just my personal experience.
