They have that but use the data maliciously. You’re shown a curated feed of mostly higher and lower ELO attractiveness with an occasional drip-fed “looks match” — just scarce enough to keep you swiping.
A new player in the dating app field that does look-matching in real time would flip the table. And by “real time,” I don’t mean magic; I mean continuous, online updates to your local desirability percentile based on fresh behavior (mutual likes, reply rates, actual dates). Match from a current, local cohort and show mostly within your band (± a small window), with limited, disclosed exploration outside it. No endless dopamine famine, no bait-and-switch.
And while we’re fixing things, bring back the deep filtering that used to make sites like OKCupid great — income, education, politics, religion, lifestyle habits — all the stuff modern swipe apps hide because it reduces “time on app.” Right now the only platforms that even let you filter on income are places like Seeking Arrangement, which obviously caters to a very specific crowd. The rest of the industry has stripped out real filters in favor of slow-drip mismatches to keep you scrolling.
Put those two together — honest, real-time looks matching and transparent, old-school filtering — and you’d have the first dating app in years that’s actually built to get people off the app and into real relationships. Which, ironically, is why none of the big players will ever do it.
