Why do we have large hadron collider when we barely know how lithium burns?

  Everyone discussing the properties of molten lithium is like "wtf, we don't really understand why it does this," but this is an element we've experimenting with for centuries. Shouldn't this be a bigger priority than detecting theoretical particles?
