People operating in an oppressive political environment could say anything except that the Pope was a fraud or that the king was a shitty ruler. You were allowed to say anything but those two things. Yet for centuries, Europeans had to put up with shitty popes and kings. How can you get "political" in an environment like that? What if there were IRL atheists who didn't believe in the Bible AT ALL living in Europe at all times throughout history, with no way to talk to each other?
