Around 16,800 supporters have reportedly “cancelled World Cup tickets overnight”, prompting FIFA to schedule an emergency meeting later this week.
Given FIFA’s strict no-cancellation policy on sold World Cup tickets, it is more likely that the figure reflects fans withdrawing from the third phase of ticket sales - either the “random draw” selection process or purchases made via member organisations.
Preparations for the showpiece tournament, which kicks off in June - now less than six months away - have been repeatedly shrouded in controversy. FIFA estimates that between 5.5 and 6.5 million supporters will travel to attend matches across the USA, Canada and Mexico, potentially making it the most-attended World Cup in history and surpassing the 3.6 million fans recorded at the 1994 tournament.
However, while some concerns for prospective attendees stem from countries included on US President Donald Trump’s ‘travel ban’ list, fresh issues have also been raised over safety, with growing unease surrounding the host nation amid the current political climate.
Nearly 17,000 Fans Cancel World Cup Tickets Over USA's Conflict with Venezuela
Per a report by Roya News, and relayed by Ticket News via Reddit, the cancellations stem from boycott campaigns spreading across social media, with overseas fans citing safety concerns and discomfort with the US political climate. Posts carrying the hashtag 'BoycottWorldCup' have been circulating widely, as supporters voice their dissatisfaction with the direction of the tournament.
Protesters are urging ticket holders to reconsider attending “until the Trump regime is gone,” following his orders to carry out airstrikes on Venezuela, which were followed by the kidnapping of the country’s dictator. He has since made “veiled and overt threats” towards Colombia, Cuba and Denmark. The controversy has also led to more than 20 MPs calling for the USA to be removed from the World Cup.
Amid the reported cancellations, it's added that FIFA have scheduled an emergency meeting this week to address the situation, including fan safety concerns, declining ticket commitments and growing reputational risks as the tournament draws closer. While no official agenda has been released, the meeting is expected to bring together senior FIFA officials, member association representatives and tournament organisers.
FIFA Refuse To Reconsider Their Peace Prize Award
Gianni Infantino has long been seen as the ultimate yes-man to Trump, and make no mistake - the hastily assembled Peace Award appears to have been created largely to flatter the US president. That helps explain why, despite growing calls for FIFA to rethink its position, a Daily Mail report has revealed there are no plans to scrap the award handed to America’s political figurehead.
