Posts carrying the hashtag 'BoycottWorldCup' have been circulating widely, as supporters voice their dissatisfaction with the direction of the tournament.
Protesters are urging ticket holders to reconsider attending “until the Trump regime is gone,” following his orders to carry out airstrikes on Venezuela, which were followed by the kidnapping of the country’s dictator. He has since made “veiled and overt threats” towards Colombia, Cuba and Denmark. The controversy has also led to more than 20 MPs calling for the USA to be removed from the World Cup.
Amid the reported cancellations, it's added that FIFA have scheduled an emergency meeting this week to address the situation, including fan safety concerns, declining ticket commitments and growing reputational risks as the tournament draws closer.
