Even a cursory exploration of e.g. the slavery question shows that Europeans merely began to access long standing chattel markets that were primarily patronized by central and west african warlords, some Arab, but some also African-African. The flesh markets in the Sahel and Zanzibar, amongst countless other locales, had been standing and populated since days predating the Romans in many cases. Europeans BOUGHT slaves, but they certainly didn't take them. And in many cases Jews were the middlemen for these transactions, peddling a new mercantile ware as they peddled others, as they were for the Ottomans. |
