Hardly! I love 80s shit and some thrift store near me sells laserdiscs for $1/each. I don't have a laserdisc player and don't plan on getting one, but the cases are large so they're like mini-posters

From what I understand they actually did quite well in Japan and Hong Kong in the 1990s; there was more money sloshing around over there for high-end videophiles.

I only ever saw one once--there was some video we saw in science class in high school that was on laserdisc
