A young relative is really into the newly released Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters, and I was exposed to watching it. It features top Asian American and Korean talent and is very slickly produced. The show features inverted gender norms: the KPop girl band heroes are masculine butt kickers, while the KPop boy band enemies are feminine; tired old tropes. The girls and boys are pitted against each other. Other than that the show is obsessed with the importance of being famous, wealth and materialism; it is utterly secular and has no emotional or spiritual weight to it. One may take into account that South Korea has among the lowest fertility rate in the world at 0.82, less than half of replacement - whatever their values are are the values of Death.
Of the top billed female cast members, Arden Cho is 39 and childless, May Hong is 38 and childless and “queer”, Yunjin Kim is 51 and childless - what a disaster. The male actors are somewhat better off.
Whatever this poisonous ideology is will disappear within another two generations or so.

Compare and contrast this show with the first three seasons of Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia by Guillermo del Toro, which is really great - it follows the traditional Campbellian hero’s journey narrative arc. The spinoffs and sequels thereafter are all garbage, but the three seasons captures lightning in a bottle and, while a children’s show, I recommend it to adults:

It’s a kids show with catchy music.
Who cares if the voice actors are shrews?
