She was involved in a large scale multi-state drug operation. 25 other individuals in Milwaukee were arrested alone, with several hundred being arrested country-wide. During the arrests, police confiscated 19 kilos of heroin, 12 kilos of fentany, and large amounts of cocaine and meth. The organization was also tied to multiple murders. She copped a plea deal, probably ratted out some of her compatriots, and still received a 30 month sentence in federal prison. During the investigation, she was recorded multiple times speaking Laotian. Deportation would not have been unexpected, as the federal government would have let her know that pleading guilty would potentially lead to deportation. Her attorney would have also informed her of this. She also had 37 years to become a US citizen, as most SE Asians do within a few years because their local communities help members with employment, education and citizenship. She's a criminal in an organization that was likely responsible for hundreds, if not thousands of deaths. Deportation is the correct move.

Why was Ma Yang deported?
Yang was among 26 people indicted in a sweeping federal case in 2020. It alleged Yang helped count and package cash that was mailed to marijuana suppliers in California.
She took a plea deal and served 2 ½ years in prison. She said her attorney incorrectly told her the plea deal would not affect her immigration status. Her green card was revoked.
At the end of her sentence, Yang was transferred to an ICE detention facility. There, at the advice of another attorney, she agreed to a document stating that a deportation order would be entered against her in exchange for being released.
Despite agreeing to be deported, she and her attorney believed it wouldn't happen, since only a small handful of people, if any, are deported to Laos each year, and Laos typically has refused to accept U.S. deportees.
