In a 1723 memoir, Constance Goodwyfe of Boston wistfully described her younger years before marriage and motherhood.

"A young maiden could live on a nickel and still afford many loaves of breade and the finest wyne," she wrote. "One could travel by carriage to New Amsterdam and see gentlemen for pennies," she added.

Goodwyfe died at age 36 after bearing twelve children. Eight survived.
