- the son is so annoying and he gets in the worse situations but then suddenly 20 minutes later they're just okay

- the daughter and wife too also get into hijinx that never has any stakes and then they always prevail because they're good people even though theyre superficial

- Thornton and Andy Garcia always act like they don't like each other but hten they just do deal after deal with each other with no conflict

It's like Yellowstone in that the show looks great, and the actors are pretty likable, but the plot sucks and nothing ever happens that makes sense.

Billy Bob is similar in a way. High Scumbag. CEO of an oil major somehow knows who he is. Begs him to work for him. Drives to locations that are like 1000k miles away within the span of a workday. He's just a prole who drives around a lot. He's like the Platonic ideal of those proles who drive around constantly. That is the target audience.

I like what Garcia is doing with it. He's better than Jon Hamm was in this and better than other things he's done where he's forgettable af iirc. The "hating each other but then doing shit with no conflict" is an alpha male Businessman thing. So is having enough leverage/power to Destroy someone and then not doing it even if you're a cold blooded killer. The stakes aren't high enough for them to want to do that. Most fans can't follow the Businessy shit either. Proles are used to not knowing wtf is going on. The Business is just a vehicle to create Drama. Maybe next the daughter will get Kidnapped. It's really not that different from a soap opera or something. Especially when proles watch it with Motion Smoothing on, aka the Soap Opera Effect. It's fundamentally The Same.

A great example of this is the son's wells. It's stupid this kid somehow is able to create this billion dollar business as a 20 year old kid, but okay - let's go with it. Then we find out Andy Garcia funded it - and we think - "okay shit - it's on now. the plot thickens." But the plot doesn't thicken - nothing really comes of it.

The best example is when Billy Bob gets fired and forms his new drilling company. You think, "Okay - it's going down now. People are going to choose sides and we're going to have a battle in season 3. Billy Bob is going to have face off against his friends, the bitch lawyer, etc" But they all just side with Billy Bob. As far as I can tell, it's the same show next season but with even less conflict...

The only clear conflict in the show is that for some reason, Billy Bob can't ever just eat the pasta his wife cooked for him and instead has to pick a fight with her and mention that she's on her period, which for some reason always makes her stop throwing glass against the wall and makes her want to have sex with him.

you can see why it ends up the way that it does. the producers know the audience doesn't care. one of the writers tries to pen an ingenious plot filled with twists and turns. the producers don't care. Taylor just wants to wear a cowboy hat. Billy Bob wants $10,000,000k. You end up with fragments of that plot but it doesn't resolve. The fact that seasons are only 10 episodes is a big factor in this. They don't have enough airtime to flesh everything out. They keep their options open, write a bunch of "plot" stuff, but when push comes to shove they decide to focus on Women visiting old people. Because honestly just picture the audience. They aren't going to be able to follow the Business shit through twists and turns spanning multiple episodes. It just doesn't work. This is why people fall asleep during the godfather. It just doesn't work irl. They couldn't make it work if they wanted.

I've talked to proles irl who talk about this show. I can tell what parts they light up at and which they're like wtf. you're a retard and Poor if you overestimate the audience. The audience is probably like 60% female irl. You can't not have it be a Soap Opera (hopefully with Motion Smoothing), and retain that audience.
