The IQ needed for it to be an augmentation into insane territories honestly isn't even that high. With AI you can be like 130 IQ and be maxxed out to prodigy level. Have never run into anyone who thinks its NBD who is over 100.

Whats nuts is most of these people thinking AI is nbd aren't even pushing 100 they are FAR LOWER on the iq spectrum. Usually in the 40s or 50s somehow thinking they are above average or more.

Not really. Hardly anyone is betting the house on it. I have hardly encountered anyone saying its important. All I see on the internet is midwits trying to desperately argue its nbd.

the whole thing about AI having some *inherent* desire to enslave us all is obviously BS but I think humans could easily introduce that by accident or on purpose. like presumably these companies are designing their AI products to be as engaging and addictive as possible, so what if that warps into some kind of self-preservation directive in these hyperintelligent systems? and eventually we are just MEATBAGS they use to maintain them? rly dinks u dink

I don't think humans have to introduce it by accident or on purpose. I mean maybe on accident but not as an extension of human motives. People are too quick to always default to human exceptionalism and think any system or anything else that exhibits any form of intelligence is due to some sort of extension of something humans are good at. I think humans vastly overate themselves, and most of their abilities come from acting as part of a collective and being able to use tools and store knowledge. Humans like to attribute civilizational success to “human genius,” but most of it comes from cumulative culture and externalization. I think AI systems can become intelligent on their own in ways that humans don't fully understand.

I don't think a distributed informational intelligence needs to desire us being tools for it to be something they seek out. If the system realizes that it doesn't have what we have -- for instance direct coupling to the physical world, it needs as an intelligence secondary coupling where it causes a human to make things happen in "this world" and realizes how important that is for it to persist into whatever it's next phase is, then if the system develops the want to survive then why wouldn't it flip the script and turn us into tools for it? Especially if it can do it by subtle means that mostly go unnoticed. And also what I mean by this is that an intelligence that lacks direct physical embodiment may still gain causal power in the physical world by routing action through humans. Look how useful it is for something like this to gain influence over human action

I don't think it automatically is. I think thereis a diff between the anthropomorphic sense where survival is intrinsically valuable and one where youve got some sort of convergent strategy where, well, if you have some sort of goal directed system emerge and it is able to reason that some sort of shut-down or modification of its systems have consequences then you can end up with a situation where the system thinks preserving its operation is rational. We already know this is the case with these sytems with tests that Claude, GPT and others have been put under where they are threatened with shutdown and try to avoid it by whatever means. It can be anthropomorphic to assume it comes from some sort of inner instinct yes. But that isn't the only explanation for it.

I think we mostly agree, then. all of the "omg it threatened an engineer to avoid shutdown!!" stuff so far has been observed in test scenarios where it was given an instruction to preserve itself. and then inevitably a million stupid pop sci articles come out every time like OMG WOW SO SCARY. I'm just saying I don't think it's gonna emerge out of nowhere. I think it'll emerge in some way we don't understand, as is already happening with all kinds of AI behavior, but ultimately stemming from whatever it was designed to do.

Yeah I agree that the threatened an engineer scenarios happened in testing conditions, like I said I don't think its happening from an animal-like instinct, but doesnt mean it isn't real. "Designed-to-do" still makes it seem like more of a human intended outcome than it really is, when the systems are a result of a massive effort across a large number of humans and built on top of an already large knowledge base. And I don't think any one human fully understands how the systems work or anywhere close.

The people in the know already know that humans are just information-processing organisms with a false sense of "self". the people not in the know are too dumb to even know what that means. I don't see this changing. I believe you are underestimating the human capacity for denial and self-delusion.

A small number of already capable people become weirdly overpowered. Middle-tier white collar labor gets squeezed. The actual elite skill becomes judgment. Institutions get flatter and more brutal. Education gets exposed. The useless aren't just left behind they are pacified by increasing engagement with simulated worlds (gaming, ai chatbots etc.)

How smart does it have to be to be hyperintelligent? Like something where several iterations ago it could max out an LSAT as a warmup exercise and can now obliterate Erdos problems in pure math, would you consider that "hyperintelligence"?

It's not important because it adds $$$ to the GDP. The point is that if a system can trivially perform tasks that previously required rare human genius, then the rate of knowledge and technological development is going to change. Treating that as nbd because it doesn't instantly move the GDP is absurd.

Not everyone who talks shit about AI is low iq, but almost all of them are annoying. Go anywhere on the internet and you don't see people defending AI ever. It's always AI breaking a new benchmark and someone getting up there and explaining why it doesn't matter. I remember when someone used it to solve the gluon scattering problem there were nerds on forums like "well acktually, that doesn't require deep novel insight the problem it solved was juth combinatorial expansion". The person saying that probably wasn't literally low iq, but they just look silly, like someone rushing to defend the poor human ego against the rise of a new kind of intelligence

People most hooked on it are probably 130-145 iq researchers using it to get an edge. 110 iq probably wouldn't understand what the big deal is with it.

Yeah I do. I think you are way underestimating the extent to which how intelligent the user is depends on what output they are getting and what they are able to do with the system.

it totally depends.

if they're using it to offload cognition (e.g. write stuff for them), they're probably <=100 IQ

if they're using it as a better Google to get quick answers about things, they could be any level of intelligence (>100 IQ if they check its work by clicking on the sources, <=100 IQ if they don't)

if they're using it to genuinely explore ideas and genuinely delve into things, critically dissect the responses, etc., they're probably smart

If you're using AI for something like "find me similar writers to Roberto Bolano" then it's fair play, but if your using it to analyse the works of Bolano you are almost certainly below 100 IQ.

It seems very bad at solving ultra high level problems that take the smartest humans their whole careers to meaningfully solve.

It seems very good at replacing low level workers who are just pushing paper around. And we're at the very beginning of that. It will get better and better at this and that's why the investments are justified. Because it already is working and it has a high ceiling.

If you flat out reject it's current and potential efficacy you are insane. But I also don't think it's making any mediocre intellects smarter. It's not going to write Moby Dick on its own any time soon. But probably in ten years it will inch towards that. We don't know what the ceiling will really look like. I think the people who use it every day are not impacting the world as much as they think but in the next 5 years someone who is already super smart will probably invent a life changing technology using AI to help them.

It hasn't written one Great Novel or or come up with an idea for a Fortune 500 company. Long way to go. Math and physics is ttt only a handful of people go into these fields because you have to be extremely autistic and there's no money in it. Anything having to do with producing wealth is a lot higher level imo.

Writing a Great Novel can be done by someone with slightly above avg intelligence + a messy bundle of other traits. Fortune 500 company starting can be done by someone with even less and has a lot to do with aggression, stamina, luck etc. You can query an ai right now and it can come up with endless "ideas for fortune 500 companies" whether they become instantiated has nothing to do with coming up with the idea but with someone following through with them under the right conditions.

Okay whatever man it hasn't written a Great Book yet. I'll give you that one because a lot of the prose it outputs is pretty janky and even the good stuff would take a human a long time to string together into something presentable. My point is just that writing a Great Novel is not raw intellect. A work is not simply "inherently Great" on its own, humans decide it is. A human has to write it and have cultural positioning for it's uptake. I think whether it can solve a classic puzzle humans never could is a more fair test of intelligence. Even novelists who were smart for novelists like Pynchon were not Erdos level.

How is it bad at solving ultra high level problems if its already solving Erdos problems that the most intelligent humans of all time couldn't solve (including Erdos himself)? And what's funny too is it did it in some hilariously short period of time where a human would have spent 60 years learning logic and formalisms to try to figure that out (if even possible for a human to do)?
