Holding some relatively modest amount of physical silver as one of multiple hedges against truly catastrophic systemic failure -- with the expectation that you will probably never really make a significant profit from it, and it's purely a limited use worst case scenario insurance policy -- is defensible. Think of it as a sunk cost rather than a financial investment. At most maybe 3-5% of your net worth if you're relatively poor, 1-2% if you're relatively well off, .5-1% if you're rich.
