One of the other things that Hancock does is actually go into the field as almost the default approach. I also think it can be argued without necessarily thinking that the stars directly influence us.

The stars were all mapped at a point in time and the initial map coincided with Earthly events that are cyclical in nature. i.e.) rise and fall of civilizations, overgrowth of society, wars, etc. These things all have a certain rhythm to them that is tied to the seasons and passing of time (and thus to the stars.) So whoever mapped this stuff initially would have been tying various constellations to events on the Earth.
