can't do a top 5 love every track/album - most memorable though is a remix of Crystal that was always on rotation at a nightclub in Manchester off my face on MDMA

my cutoff for NO is technique. some of the stuff on republic is cool but they just lost something around then imo.
if you haven't read Peter Hook's books, i HIGHLY recommend. he is absolutely fucking hilarious and a really good writer. he has that mancunian dry wit, which i think is 180. he's also catty as shit and talks all kinds of shit about barney.
his joy division book is great, i've read that twice. same with the hacienda book. i've read his new order book 3-4 times. it's hard to put down. i'll pick it back up every couple years and read it again. it's great.
it's hard to overstate how influential these guys were to music. huge pussy hounds and cokeheads/drunks too, which is hilarious. you'd think they were gay or sat around reading poetry all the time.

180 180 just ordered his hacienda and inside new order book ty
was too young to make it to hacienda but would often go to the dry bar that NO owned for some friends shows and Summer would be about.
Their imprint on Manchester is insane I'd say more influential than Oasis (HAC/the first bar in the northern quarter).

peter hook writes about this in the NO book, but his last few shows with NO, he wrote on his bass amp (over the course of several shows)
ONE DAY
TWO BOYS
FROM SALFORD
BECAME FRIENDS AND STARTED A BAND
WHAT HAPPENED
or something like that, and he says nobody noticed.
it's a real shame that they had the fallout they did, although imo all bands have a shelf life and they'd outlived theirs by quite a bit (kinda like the stones). but it's really unfortunate to see these two guys who captured lightning in a bottle two separate times and had a massive influence on music be unable to be in the same room with each other.
i've also seen NO a couple times, both without hooky, and it just doesn't seem like it's the same at all. the push-pull between him and barney (retaining the rock element vs going all electric) is really one of the things that made their music so great

a quick scan through - amazing. they were selling pills in '88 to cover costs for raves.

190. you may have read this here before, but i will poast it in case you didn't. in nov 2016, i went to see peter hook and the light. they were playing both substance records in dc.
i was standing at the back of the venue drunk off my ass, and toward the end of the set, this chick (kinda cute) kept looking at me, and she came over and said ARE YOU HERE FOR JOY DIVISION OR NEW ORDER? at the time i was a masisve JD fan and casual NO fan (this has since changed, i love NO way more now), and i said "eh...joy division? i like em both tho" and she kept kinda chatting me up.
when the show ended she said "hey wait a sec until people leave" and i was like ok whatever. then the lights came on and she asked me if i wanted to meet hooky because she worked for a store called Politics and Prose and was a publicist of some kind. i said sure why not. she was with 2-3 other people and she brought us into the dressing room. after about 10 mins, he walked in, no shirt on, took one look at us and said "right. fuck no," and walked out lmao.
then we left to a restaurnt across the street and it was obvious she was flirting with me. i was kinda weirded out and said i was going to piss but got in an uber and disappeared.
and it turns out this chick lives a mile from me and our kids were in preschool together. we noticed each other a week or two later and were like ehhh and never spoke of it. i actually just saw her husband saturday at our kids' basketball game.

tbh i regretted not doing something, and i really can't explain why i didn't because i was doing stuff like that at the time.
thank god i didn't bc that would have been awkward as fuck lol.
when we were still in the venue, she said to one of her guy friends "I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M SO DRAWN TO THIS GUY. WHAT IS IT HEHE?" and he said "well, he's very handsome, you clearly want to kiss him." and i was like :|

still my fav.
i was too young for New Order's heyday, but i remember this from 90s radio. very evocative.
i associate it with that weird 80s mini-revival in '93 when Duran Duran had big radio hits (Ordinary World, Come Undone) and even Morrissey was playing on MTV (The More You Ignore Me).

New order refused to do top of the pops unless they could play live. The show finally relented due to how big Blue Monday got. And it sounded like shit, which makes it 190

I was a huge fan of them 20 years ago (I own the Retro box set with the limited edition 5th disc, which was apparently only distributed in the UK), but my listening of them has fallen off a cliff.
I really, really liked the Get Ready album they put out in 2001 and the Here To Stay single they put out in 2002.
My controversial opinion for this thread is that Primitive Notion is a T5 song of theirs.

i remember that box set. didn't it have a hawk or something on the box?
i never really gave get ready a chance, but i'm listening to it rn. it's good. i still think they really lost something after technique though. from their inception until 1989/1990 they were really special and caught lightning in a bottle. i don't think there was any chance they could re-create that after that initial period.
still, this album is pretty solid. i remember when it came out, i was kind of a JD van and really only liked blue monday, temptation and maybe bizarre love triangle by no. the first album i'd actually bought was regret (at a record trader store, for like $2) and thought it was kinda blah and didn't give them a chance after that for a while.
primitive notion sounds good based on my listening just now, but T5 status is crazy.

Yeah Retro has a hawk and a disco ball on the cover
I agree they weren't the same after Technique. But I liked the turn toward rock with Get Ready. I was quite disappointed with Waiting for the Sirens' Call, I was so turned off with that one that I backed way off on listening to their old stuff and the new albums that followed.
I was going to see them in 2020 but Covid took care of that. I think they came to town sometime after that but I didn't care enough to check them out
