Regrading the 2012 NFL draft
Few drafts 'improved' more than Seattle's, but many look different today
Seattle Seahawks
Post-draft grade: C-
Summary: Give John Schneider and Pete Carroll all the credit in the world. I had major questions on value and even need with some of their picks, and in most cases, the Seahawks proved me wrong. At the time I wrote, "Let's be clear: I think the Seahawks drafted guys they really wanted, and with a plan in mind for how to use them." Did they ever. Russell Wilson might be the defining pick of the draft, already a star and a guy Seattle got at No. 75 overall. I really liked Wilson as a prospect, and said on the set I thought he'd be "a great test case" for short quarterbacks. My question of the pick also had to do with the fact that Seattle had acquired Matt Flynn. If Wilson had been 6-foot-2, I think he would have been a top-5 pick -- said it then, say it now. Is that evaluation still reasonable? Has Wilson proven that short QBs can't all be lumped together? Ultimately, evaluators will still have questions about whether short QBs can succeed because they simply have so few of them to evaluate. The sample size for guys at Wilson's size who've succeeded as he has is so small that not only is Wilson almost unique, I don't see a QB like him coming along for years. But there's no way around the fact that he was a great pick, perhaps the best of the draft when you consider where he was taken.
I also had questions about the value of Bobby Wagner at No. 47 overall, but he was a home run, an impact starter and a guy who will be a fixture for years to come. Robert Turbin, Jeremy Lane and Greg Scruggs also look like great picks. The one pick I really questioned then and still feel the same way about is Bruce Irvin at No. 15 overall. There's no question Irvin can rush the passer, but that's really all he can do, and I still don't see him as a good value at that spot because he's so one-dimensional. I wrote then, "I wouldn't be surprised if Irvin gets 10 sacks in 2012, but that's really his game. He's not a three-down player yet." He still isn't, and is a total liability against the run, as we saw against Atlanta in the playoffs. He finished with 8.0 sacks, but has plenty of development left if he wants to become more than a situational player. I think you want more of a complete player at that point in the draft. Still, this was an exceptional draft, a very good one in terms of immediate value and likely a defining one for the franchise based on Wilson alone.
New grade: A

Bruce Irvin is a head case and will be gone in 3 years. Russell Wilson is a fluke. He will not be a starter in 3 years. Might be a backup for a while.
Bobby Wagner is the only guy in that draft who will be a starter in 4 years.

It's too early to tell still, but let's do some analysis.
1st round pick Bruce Irvin: 2 sacks (tied for 120th) and 20 tackles. Not good.
2nd round pick Bobby Wagner: 1.5 sacks and 60 tackles (tied for 45th). OK.
3rd Round pick Russell Wilson: 17th in yards passing and 10th in completion percentage. Good.
4th Round picks: Robert Turbin: 154 yards rushing. Sucks.
Jaye Howard: Cut by Seahawks in 2013
5th Round pick Korey Toomer: Cut by Seahwaks in 2012. Practice squad/IR
6th Round picks Jeremy Lane: 7 tackles. Sucks.
Winston Guy: Cut by Seahawks in 2013
7th Round picks JR Sweezy: Sucks.
Gregg Scruggs: Cut by Seahawks in 2013.
So, at the end of the day, this entire draft gives Seattle 3 players: Irvin, Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson.
Bobby Wagner looks like an OK player who will stick around as a starter. Irvin is injury prone, a head case, and has not produced at all in his 2nd year. So, really, it all comes down to Wilson who is way overhyped and I maintain is not that good.
In sum, FUCK OFF YOU FUCKING FAGGOTS.

No. 1: Seattle Seahawks
After one of the worst picks in the first round I can ever remember, the Seattle Seahawks didn't draft any positions of need or draft for the future.
Pete Carroll is proving why he didn’t make it in the NFL the first time. Not only was Bruce Irvin a reach at No. 15, the Seahawks proved they were oblivious to their madness by celebrating their selection.
As if the day wasn’t bad enough, Seattle selecting Russell Wilson, a QB that doesn’t fit their offense at all, was by far the worst move of the draft. With the two worst moves of the draft, Seattle is the only team that received an F on draft day.

Russell Wilson is by far the most valuable player, $-wise, in the NFL. Him alone in this draft makes it a home run. Having any contributing players besides him is gravy.

You could say the same about Brady or Manning. What's your point?
He's unequivocally not a system QB though
EDIT: In any case, getting a mid-tier starting QB with a 3rd round pick is a great outcome

That "total fucking bust" was a top 50 LB by Approximate Value and was a regular starter on by far the best defense in the league.
Wagner is, as you know, a fucking stud.
Their 25-year-old quarterback was top-ten by any conceivable statistical measure.
Not only is not the "worst draft ever," it's going to go down as one of the best of recent memory w/r/t its first couple years, behind only Bears '04 (Harris/Johnson/Berrian/Vasher), Cardinals '04 (Fitzgerald/Dansby/Dockett), Saints '06 (Bush/Harper/Evans/Colston), Niners '10 (Davis/Iupati/Bowman), and I'm probably forgetting one or two more.

Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson (third round), middle linebacker and two-time leading tackler Bobby Wagner (second), linebacker/pass-rush specialist Bruce Irvin (first), starting right guard J.R. Sweezy (seventh) and nickel back and special-teams standout Jeremy Lane (sixth). That's not even counting poaching Kearse for nothing.
Yeah, historically worst draft of all time, dumbshit.

Of their 7 selections, only one (Joe Looney) is still on the team, and he doesn't suit up for games. Zero players contributed significantly their rookie year, and only two played any meaningful snaps in their second year.
In all, the 49ers draft class played 276 snaps COMBINED.
The Seahawks, on the other hand, drafted their most valuable offensive player (Wilson) and defensive player (Wagner) that year

lol. wagner is better than good. keep deluding yourself.
and wilson is an above average starter. you ask any team where they'd draft a player if they knew he'd be as good as wilson, and they'd say top 3. seahawks got him in the 3rd round.
i like how you think that arguing the fact that there aren't three hall of famers here, that means somehow seattle didn't have an exceptionally great draft in 2012.

From ESPN article on worst contracts ever, discussing the Percy Harvin deal
"Fortunately for the Seahawks, the failure of the Harvin and Flynn contracts pales in comparison to the team's draft successes with players such as Wilson, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Bobby Wagner. Seattle made it to consecutive Super Bowls, including its victorious romp over Denver in XLVIII."

The lulziest part is that if Rudolph applied the same cynical view to everyone in the NFL that he does to 2012 Seattle draft picks, the league would have 10 VERY GOOD players, 40 OKAY players and the rest of the league would be PURE SHIT.
If any team knew they'd get Bobby Wager's talent, they'd draft him top 5. Seattle got him in round two. If any team knew they'd get Russell Wilson's talent, they'd draft him top 3. Seattle got him in round 3. Those two picks alone make it an incredible draft, and add to that Irvin, Tupin and Sweezy are more than serviceable, this draft was an insane win. Even if you think Wilson is only an average starting QB, it's still at least 95th percentile draft. And if you think he's good (as most do), it's really one of the best in the past decade.

Best class: Seattle Seahawks
Much like the Broncos, this class initially got a frigid reception. The composite grade from five of the major websites covering the draft averaged out to about a C-minus, a scorching example of why instantly grading NFL draft classes is perilous. In hindsight, Seattle's draft was an A-plus, leaving a lot of egg on the faces of critics (and fans, who graded the class a "C" on NFL.com).
Three picks were instant hits and significant foundational pieces to a Super Bowl win: Linebacker Bruce Irvin (first round), linebacker Bobby Wagner (second round) and quarterback Russell Wilson (third round). Seventh-round defensive end J.R. Sweezy was converted into a solid offensive guard and started three seasons (including both Super Bowl appearances) before departing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a coveted free agent. Meanwhile, sixth-round cornerback Jeremy Lane has been injury prone, but had some moments. And fourth-round defensive end Jaye Howard has been a productive NFL starter for the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately, Seattle cut him after a disappointing rookie season, allowing him to blossom elsewhere.
But here is what is amazing about this class: the other four picks in the class – running back Robert Turbin (fourth round), linebacker Korey Toomer (fifth), safety Winston Guy (sixth) and defensive end Greg Scruggs (seventh) – all played in the NFL last season. That means Seattle's entire 10-player draft class was on a roster four years later. There aren't many double-digit draft classes that last four NFL seasons. That, along with the star power, makes this one special.

The 2012 Seahawks are the best here, and it isn't close. The 10 players they drafted produced a remarkable 263 AV over their first five seasons. The 2004 Chargers are second (since Eli Manning and Philip Rivers were a draft-day swap we’re counting them toward the teams they actually played for), followed by the 2008 Falcons class that included Matt Ryan.
With an AV gap of +70, Wilson is the single best pick in our data set.

With caveats.
Bruce Irvin was a bust. That was their 1st round pick.
Bobby Wagner obviously proved to be a great 2nd round pick and a great LB.
Russell Wilson is a good QB. I still don't love the guy, but was obviously a great pick in the 3rd round.
The rest of their draft was bad.
That said, drafts are judged on the 2 best players that come out and obviously, under that metric, it was a great draft - especially for 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Yeah - I don't like they guy. That's my opinion.
That said, he is obviously a good QB and a great one for a 3rd round pick.
Also, this wasn't last year.

No team has gotten more value out of the NFL draft over the past decade than the Seattle Seahawks -- thanks to an elite 2012 class -- and no team has drafted less value than the New York Jets, according to our study of the last 10 drafts.
-
Best class from 2012-2021 drafts: 2012. This was easily the best draft in team history, not just the past decade. And that would arguably be the case based solely on the two potential Hall of Famers they found on Day 2 that year: Russell Wilson (Round 3) and Bobby Wagner (Round 2). Seattle's 10 picks produced three other starters on the 2013 team that won Super Bowl XLVIII and the 2014 team that nearly repeated. Bruce Irvin (15th overall) has 52 career sacks, Jeremy Lane (Round 6) was the nickelback in the Legion of Boom and guard J.R. Sweezy (Round 7) has started over 100 NFL games. -- Brady Henderson
