Sotomayor: Lawyering is a gift, and unhappy lawyers should ‘go back to square one’

Justice Sonia Sotomayor believes that “being a lawyer is one of the best jobs in the whole wide world.”

The justice explains why in an interview with Oprah Winfrey published in the February issue of O Magazine, according to the Daily Report blog ATLaw. Lawyers try to help people, Sotomayor says, and being involved in the profession is a gift. She goes on to offer her advice to dissatisfied lawyers.

“Any lawyer who is unhappy should go back to square one and start again,” Sotomayor said.

Sotomayor is promoting her new book, My Beloved World, in a series of interviews. She tells Jon Stewart of the Daily Show that she has been on “a magical ride” since her appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, and she wrote the book to remember “the real Sonia.”

But she hasn’t been dating since her confirmation, Sotomayor tells Oprah, and the justice answers in the negative when Oprah asks if being on the Supreme Court is the most fun she has ever had. “The answer is, truthfully, is no,” Sotomayor says. “The life I gave up was the most fun I ever had.” As a judge on the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Sotomayor said, “I could be more me. I could go out with friends and not think twice about it.”
