1 dead after hit-and-run on Bailey Avenue bridge

A Buffalo man who was well known in the community died after he was struck by a car Thursday night while in a wheelchair, Buffalo Police said.

Officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run with injury on the Bailey Avenue bridge between West Shore Avenue and Pullman Place around 11:15 p.m. Police found 36-year-old Zaire Allison, more commonly known as Flip, unconscious in the center of the roadway.

He was transported to ECMC, where he later died from his injuries.

Flip could often be found at the intersection of Broadway and Bailey Avenue and became recognizable across Buffalo.

“If you’re from Buffalo, I can bet you’re gonna know who Flip is,” Local Jameela Brown said.

Tamieka Walters, who grew up with Flip, said he was a smart person who used to rap and write.

“I’m glad I had the pleasure of knowing him before what everyone else saw because, you know, they didn’t see him sometimes as a human being, but I knew him before, during and after everything that happened, and I still showed him love and respect because he deserved it,” Walters said.

Flip was featured in a music video by Buffalo rapper Westside Gunn, who took to Instagram to share a tribute to the person he calls, “The Legend Eastside Flip.” The musician was just one of many who have shared memories of Flip.

According to police, witnesses reported that Allison was traveling southbound in a wheelchair when he was in the northbound lane of Bailey Avenue. Police said he was struck by an unidentified car that fled the scene after the incident.

Police said the collision ejected Allison from the wheelchair and sent the empty wheelchair into the southbound lane, where it was hit by a second car. The occupants of the second car pulled over and attempted to provide aid until first responders arrived.

Buffalo Councilwoman Leah Halton-Pope said those residents were good samaritans.

“I think that’s the best part of the City of Buffalo,” Halton-Pope said. “We have a lot of great individuals who do love one another, and while someone was careless and did not care, to know that another Buffalonian would stop and to make sure they offered as much care as they could….I’m grateful.”

The incident is under investigation by the Buffalo Police Accident Investigation Unit.
