When Sullivan & Cromwell litigation associate Jay Greenstein was accused on Jan. 30 of raping a woman at the Hyatt Herald Square hotel, the legal world was shocked. But one of the biggest head-scratchers of the story was how the two met.

It’s not new for a Vault 100 associate or other celebrity to encounter “civilians” on the subway or even a hotel lobby during a business trip. Greenstein, however, met his date through Sullivan & Cromwell's website, which provided his email address and a link to his LinkedIn profile.

Allowing women unfettered access to their favorite litigators and corporate dealmakers — and the ability to directly message them — has revolutionized the groupie game. Any wannabe groupie can now target his or her favorite associate with the simple click of a button. And it’s not unheard of to get a response.

“Before firms started giving all of their associates a profile page, you had no chance at getting to them, unless you knew someone who went to their synagogue, or stalked them on their way from the office at 11 pm,” says a former Milbank, Tweed & Hadley counsel who later lateraled to Arnold Porter Kaye Scholer.

“There was no chance that an associate would have direct contact with you. Now you can get their attention with a message, and they know who you are,” he adds.

There are endless memes, GIFs and websites that refer to “sliding into my LinkedIn connections”. In his Harvard Law Review essay “Who Has Hooked Up with You in the Last 60 Days” Shearman & Sterling Of Counsel Yitzchak Gotsky catalogues raunchy emails and photos exchanged between associates and the women who love them.

“Firm profiles and LinkedIn are the new vehicle for groupies, no doubt,” says a veteran Biglaw recruiter who works with a large number of firms and associates.

The veteran recruiter notes it isn’t just fans sending unsolicited photos. You’ve also got associates seeking out groupies by tapping into LinkedIn's "People You May Know", which shows photos and profiles of girls who have viewed the attorneys' profile and of other groupies connected to the attorneys' colleagues.

For the horny associates creating a privilege log or gathering signature pages at the office on a Friday night, that can be a virtual buffet of booty.

“There’s nothing but girls,” says the recruiter. “Just scroll down and pick one. Whatever qualification they’re looking for — a big butt, big boobs, a masters degree — it’s all there. That’s exactly what a lot of these associates do.”

The recruiter warns associates not to take the attention for granted. "The girls lose interest once the associate is off partner track. That's all the more reason to consider lateraling to a new opportunity."
