This is a dumb American perspective. I've driven through Mexico from Texas all the way to the coast (Cancun and Playa Del Carmen). There were only a few hours of the many days of driving that were sketchy and where I was worried about crime (exclusively, the border area). As to CDMX, while Edomex (the greater CDMX area) has some dangerous places they're easy to identify and avoid with even a little bit of research. Of course, major US cities have those too AND there is a shocking amount of random crime in nice places these days too. You don't see vids of the shit you see in NYC posted in Polanco and other nice areas of CDMX. |

My kids did independent study from their US schools and they made some expat, local, and tourist friends, mostly at the playground at Parque Mexico. Have stayed in Condesa and Roma Norte.
It’s really beautiful and alive in a way that no US city is other than NYC and NYC has its obvious QOL issues.
I did sense some resentment just beneath the surface sometimes when I was there (my Spanish is HS-level so I usually don’t even bother) so I’m not surprised by the protests but I’m not as excited to go back now. |

The other side is that I live in a super safe place in the US, it just isn't an urban area compared to those places. Sure, I have a town center I can walk to with some restaurants and all that, but I live in a large SFH and no one here doesn't have a car. Small kids routinely run around here without parental supervision. But this is extremely rare in the US and there is no urban area in the US with anything approaching this QOL. |

To go to where everyone wants to go it is a significant drive.
