I think they could've just waited 2 short years and released TotK as Not The Same. I think that would've been long enough to perhaps make, like, a few dungeons. maybe like 7 dungeons. 4K graphics. it was a bad business decision to release it in 2023 if it means Switch 2 basically gets No Games in the western consciousness until Switch 2 exclusive Zelda. But in Nintendo's mind they did a Good Job bc they have Mario Galaxy Remastered out in time for the Mario Galaxy movie. |

Pokemon basically doesn't count. westerners will crucify it because of its "graphics" even though it's a new Gen and they just did Z-A and Scarlet/Violet a few years ago.
westerners also crucify every live-service release (Concord, Highguard, Marathon when it comes out), as well as every attempt at an AAA Exclusive that actually targets them (Starfield, Prime 4, Halo Infinite, Avowed, Redfall), as well as AAA writ large (Fallout 76, Ubisoft in general).
the westerner requires something like the witcher or Ubisoft, massive open world, AAA production values, Choices Matter, tons of Acreage. that's the playbook. but now they're shitting on everything ubisoft does and pulling up the ignominious stock chart in youtube videos.
instead of seeing games as "crap made for retarded kids that might be good if you're lucky as fuck," they see it as "life substitute that NEEDS to be good or I'll be maf. but even if there are no good games, Indie Titles offer a Reprieve..." |
