Read boggleheads and people go to great length to do megabackdoor roth. But the only reason to do it is if you can't fill up your solo401k with pretax$. I.e. once I stop working this pretax401k will be converted to roth at 20% and now its 37%. Since I max my w2 employee 401k, my solo401k must come entirely from employer contribution hence 1099 income must be 350k+100k deductions =450k. I'm unlikely to do that on top of my regular day job.

People doing back door roths dont’ have solo 401ks. They are high-earning W-2 employees who can only save $23,500 in pre-tax dollars per year in their employer-sponsored 401k and who have been fucked out of every other meaningful deduction by our government because they happen to be accountants or lawyers rather than owning their own stupid landscaping business or nail salon.

No it is actually a very straightforward strategy specifically for doctors, accountants, etc. I have a free solo401k and I put a little into it from my 1099 side job. But the free version doesn't allow me to do "after-tax employee contribution"->roth conversion. If I produced about 450k in 1099 I could just max it out, but I'm not going to produce that much next year. So a lot of people in my situation pay $500setup +$100-200/year to set up customized plan, i.e. if i do 30k pretax, could put another 40k into roth. But I don't want to have to deal with that. I'd rather get as close as possible to maxing out via that employer contribution.

I plan to make about 200k next year by working extra evenings till 9pm after my 9-6pm shift. I may do a few weekends here a s there and get another 100k. But I don't really have a reliable weekend shifts that are worth it (i.e. pay a lot, don't ask me to do too many shifts, and not too much work). It was easier to make extra income on the side when I worked nights 7on/14off. But advantage of roth is real, i.e. pay tax and then put money in qqq in taxable account or put the same money into roth... that's 20% tax savings accumulating annually
