Runner Up: French — Easier to make than people think, so easy to impress for guests and special occasions. But too rich to be in the regular weekly rotation.

2) japanese - best of the oriental foods. healthy, light, good variety
3) indian - amazing flavor profiles, nothing else like it in the world does that to your mouth, all the different amazing breads, north indian and south indian being so different
4) italian - for obvious reasons
5) lebanese - almost as good as israel, but 180 for the same reasons |

Let’s start with easy points. Jewish “Middle Eastern” food isn’t real, they stole all our shit. These people were eating cabbage floating in water before they moved from Poland and Romania. Jewish Americans have a better claim to having a distinct cuisine than “Israelis.” HTH
Lebanese is what you think of — hummus, shawarma, but they are incredibly good at a lot more than that. Excellent savory pastries, salads, seafoods, desserts. This is a real culture and they all love food which keeps standards high.
Persians are masters at kebabs. They have perfected the art of tenderizing meat and grilling it perfectly. They don’t slather all their shit in spices to disguise the flavor. Besides that there is no culture besides the Japanese that reveres and honors the rice kernel to the degree they do. Incredible rice dishes and don’t sleep on their stews.
Greeks borrow from the Lebanese and Turkish with distinct European influences. They do those cuisines at a lower level than the originators, but they deserve credit for their treatment of the filo pastry and the various casseroles they make. They will never be my first, second, third or fourth choice for “Middle Eastern” cuisine but they’re still a solid 174 imho. |
