I knew and semi-dated a super-catholic girl in college who majored in education and wanted to go back and teach in her hometown on the gulf coast. I remember she was earnestly talking about how she wasn't sure she could make ends meet on the salary the school system there was offering, and I had kind of started to tune her out (teachers derive a sense of pride and solidarity from their low pay; cry me a river), and then she showed me the paperwork, and the actual figure was $18K.
