After President Trump announced that Coke will be made with cane sugar in the U.S., as it is in Mexico, foodies of Mexican heritage said in interviews that they weren’t excited.

“I can already hear one talking point: Trump wants our flavors but he doesn’t want our people,” said Mr. Torres, 44, a Mexican American journalist at the food and lifestyle website L.A. Taco.

How is this real? In 2025 even.

Fun fact: coke in Mexico is mostly also corn-syrup (don't remember if it is HFCS). They sell coke in cans that are cheaper and they're made in shitty factories similar to in the US. "Mexican coke" is actually a very specific factory that makes coke in the glass bottle that is actually a premium product and mostly exported (though, I remember buying the glass bottle in Mexico too so at least some is kept domestically).

Most of the sugar used in Coca Cola comes from Brazilian and Chinese exporters iirc. The biggest bottler there, FEMSA, is int'l and doesn't rely much on vertical integration

The sugarcane plant isn't even from the new world, the spaniards and the dutch brought it over from papua new guinea and SE asia. Mexicans are insane

It's especially retarded as Mexican sugar producers have been getting raped by Brazilian suppliers on the int'l markets and most of their domestic production hasn't been priced at a rate that's export viable with the rise of mass farming techniques in other major supplier nations

It gets subsidized like corn does in the states and then dumped into the domestic processed foods market at a rate that's not at all competitive for the losses that the state takes on EU style farm subsidies. You'd think they'd be happy with any low logistical cost major sales opportunity on the continent but I guess they're still into hating the yanqui more than giving their farmers legitimate outlets for their product

Mexican farm subsidies are a whole thing like California water politics and they make or break candidates or even nat'l elections as a lobby when they feel threatened

Mexicans aren't insane at all. It is a premium product sold at a premium price that has well known branding (everyone knows "Mexican coke" means the glass bottle with real sugar).

it's just the old US mass market formula, on license from an american company, bottled in mexico. these aren't "mexican flavors" or whatever the quote blurb says

in many instances it's probably not even mexican grown azucar being used (and as i said above, it's not a new world plant); mexico imports a surprising amount of sugar from other nations, and increasingly so after protracted droughts have decimated soil quality throughout the country

Yeah, but right now there isn't a single US factory that makes it using the old US mass market formula. They just kept the old factory in Mexico and used that as part of the branding.

i like how every retard with a keyboard thinks they’re some kind of political savant. yeah, i’m sure the median voter, who has spent the past decade hearing trump called hitler/antichrist/serial rapist/etc. will hear that “talking point” and go “gee, i never really thought about it that way before.”

this is legitimately a bizarre part of lib psychology: being knee jerk against cons even if they previously agreed.

a prime example is vaccine hesistency. for a long time the "vaccines cause autism!" crowd were crunchy west coast libs who were skeptical of bigpharma. as soon as some cons joined in re: the covid vax they all became "trust the science!" and accused anyone of being skeptical of bigpharmas altruism as a conspiracy theorist.
