Is it true that people living through the '80s were embarrassed by the music?

pop music, yes. the american psycho rant was written as a mockery of 80's pop fans from the perspective of an 80's music snob.

people were definitely aware of how gay and silly a lot of it was. it wasn't like there was a total lack of self awareness. but it was very tuneful and superior musically to pretty much all popular music that came post-80s, so that covered a multitude of sins.
