Season 1
E1. Cryer overacts too much, their rapport isn’t too strong yet. Charlie’s sleeping with random women and overdrinking is introduced, Alan comes to live with Charlie with Jake stays part-time. The Rose subplot is stupid, a false note and introduced, the mom is introduced. Berta the housekeeper isn’t in the episode. Rating: 8. Basic setup episode but the setup is great.
E2. A couple decent jokes but the plot around indoor seagulls doesn’t work, the TV addiction scenes kind of do, and interesting how Alan tries to reconnect with his ex which fails. The show is still finding it’s footing. Rating: 5.
E3. They go to Disneyland, Jake gets sick, Alan feels like he’s a loser, bad acting from both Sheen and Cryer as drunk. Another flat episode, this one dragged. Rating: 4.
E4. Berta finally introduced! She looks the same throughout the series (and passed away in 2020, age 77). She quits and Alan tries to do her job, poorly. Charlie doesn’t know her last name or where she lives, Alan gets her back and Jake messes with Charlie. Rose subplot irks and will continue to. Rating: 6.
E5. Divorced soccer moms relentlessly hit on Charlie even though he’s quite hung over, Alan has a chance with two women but misses the signals and blows it. Flows very well, classic episode. Rating: 8 or 8.5.

E6. Charlie screens calls from disgruntled women he’s slept with, he and Alan have a strained relationship with their mother (who also gets ghosted by a man) - I don’t really like the mother/children angle much, it has been emphasized in this and earlier episodes too much (it recedes in future seasons). Rating: 4.
E7. Charlie pretends to listen to people, saying “I understand” which elicits positive reactions, while being completely checked out mentally - great. Judith and Rose featured in the episode, bad. Rating: 4.5.
E8. Another Judith centered episode (boo), she files for divorce despite Alan hoping for reconciliation, Charlie teaches music to kids (boring). Uninspired episode. Rating: 4.
E9. One of Charlie’s (uninspiring) sex partners tries to worm her way into a longer relationship, Rose plays boardgames with Alan. Boring episode. Rating: 4.
E10. Ah, Denise Richards (who Sheen was married to at this time) is the ex-love interest in this episode. She was 32 years old here and on the downswing looks-wise (she was stunning in Starship Troopers in 1997, 6 or 7 years earlier) - I think she had her first child sometime before or around this episode. Some funny one liners, but dragged a bit. Rating: 6.
