he lived way too long for an actual thug. a hardcore banger dies in street combat no later than 35 or so. living to age 60 is an absurd luxury that he was wrong to even attempt.

he was just too successful in his thuggery. i don't blame him for wanting to keep the Death Row racket alive. they had some real names on there even after dre and snoop started branching out. nobody really predicted the popular turn to ny/east coast in the late 90s and 00s and by all accounts it seemed like it was going to stay as a california thing indefinitely
regardless his career as a real banger was over when he got diced by MC hammer's crew of all people. some people say his "career" was over after the infamous bail hearing stroke out but it was done well before that
he only seemed to respond in force when a big name went after him and ignored eazy-e/heller, ice cube, hammer, and i think even that one crip guy who was part of WC
there were so many vids on Worldstar over the years of him getting slammed by random people in front of his bodyguards and staff that he became more of a joke than anything
2pac era suge went after anyone and everything that so much as looked at him wrong so i guess it's just another case of $hekel$ corrupting the real warrior soul of a man

yeah agreed
2003-2005 is IMO largely just dead air for pop music and same with rock

Room on fire was 02 or 03
Highly Evolved was the same either 02 or 03
I think those were great years for real Alt Rock but it was also when Billboard got into the field bigly and started trying to be the Authority on Life regarding what was and wasn't legible in the field
For pop I only remember JT and Stefani really. Maybe a couple of the Latin artists but ~05 was when you really started having the big push for nigger shit all over the air (and that push was relentless)

oh indie rock was doing well then but i meant like mainstream radio rock stuff
otoh you had the killers and franz ferdinand etc blowing up which was good (although towards the later end of the dead zone period i identified) and it's a pretty wild era when freaking modest mouse was able to get widespread name recognition

Rammstein - Reise, Reise
Sportfreunde Stiller - Burli
Wir Sind Helden - Die Reklamation
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
Brand New - Deja Entendu
MCR - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
Incubus - A Crow Left of the Murder
Kings of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood
Charlie Brown Jr - Imunidade Musical
I feel like I am missing a ton of shit but this was peak alt rock. There were a ton of talented bands getting financial support from the record labels. Rock was still very mainstream. There was still a lot of CD sales. It was a mini silver age. Maybe for Green Day fans it was a fallow period. St. Anger too pissed a lot of people off.

scholarship
i think the popularization and mainstreaming of rap in general meant that the harder core stuff from the west coast just seemed increasingly outdated
i personally prefer west coast rap tho
