the whole point is that the raw data was there for anyone to see and profit from and it wasnt even all that complicated but most people dont use the muscle between their ears and need it to be dumbed down and coveyed to them in a "fun and entertaining" way before their reptile brains will absorb it

the point of the device is that its a way to rip on the 99.999999999% of the population that missed it and didnt profit wildly from it. its saying these guys didnt pull off some magic trick. they just werent busy being distracted by celebrity reality show internet porn culture which is the only thing that grabs most peoples' attention. hence the half naked chick in the bubble bath explaining to the audience what a credit default swap is and fucking selena gomez at a blackjack table explaining what a synthetic collateralized debt obligation is

thats a bit of an exaggeration. lol @ the idea that goldman bankers were high fiving each other after selling this guy CDSs and being totally oblivious to the risks involved or what was happening on the other side of the trade. the banks selling these products were aware of the risks and knew the music would eventually stop. the goal was to generate as many fees as possible before it does.

they were making bank on the fees in the interim. no one knew exactly when the music was going to stop, but there was an expectation that once it did the govt would be forced to buy these faulty assets from the banks so the banks could remain open to conduct the country's lending business. thats what was meant when you heard shitheads like Henry Paulson saying that shit like "we just need to get these toxic assets off the banks' balance sheet." He was talking about the govt paying 100 cents on the dollar for a financial product that the market probably valued at 2 cents on the dollar by that time.

She was selectively blind.

When she was defending the ratings, the glasses were on. When she was describing the corrupting forces she faced, the glasses were off.

Nah bro, the film clearly showed the poor dudes as innocent bystanders. They picked one example "hey man I payed my bills. My little girl, she just got settled in school." The little girl comes out. "Are me and my daddy going to have to move." That was the only example they showed. BUT truthfully, there are a bunch of people who signed up for a mortgage with really shitty credit who couldn't possibly pay it back and would default. They are just impulsive and dumb but no highlights on this.

well, more of the blame does fall on the lenders. it was predatory lending fueled by the financial wizardry on wall street. they showed that in the scene with the jewish guy from new girl. he sells the easy money to the poor folks, and immediately sells their mortgage upstream where it finally ends up in some tranche on wall street. thats how the shit got started in the first place, and then all the side bets on that almost took all the stupid greedy banks down. what a laugh. i hope this movie wins best picture.

That Mexican in the Florida suburb as renting the house from a dude who was far delinquent on the mortgage and had stopped paying the note - lets just be clear

I thought the movie was probably around 163

"That was the only example they showed."

No, the renter really was someone who didn't do anything wrong. The stripper with five houses and a condo wasn't a sympathetic character.

The stripper with 5 houses and a condo wasn't portrayed quite so innocently, but you're right that they didn't seem to focus much guilt on buyers.

The quote at the end about blaming foreigners and poor people was straight up HOllywood liberal bullshit out of left field.

yeah, that part was just bizarre. Especially coming from a guy who lived in a 15 million dollar apartment on Park Ave

I haven't seen it, but I have a hard time believing any scene that involves Margot Robbie and a bath tub can be bad.

the scene itself isnt bad (you are right, it's margot robbie in a bathtub). its more that this movie was lauded (repeatedly) on xoxo as being intelligent and thought provoking blahblah. the subject of the movie is. the movie itself is made for 110 iq redditors and xo 2016ers who love to pat themselves on the back for being juuust above median intelligence.

I haven't seen the movie but it deserves to be celebrated if it made the subject matter appealing to mainstream audiences

i dont disagree with that, but i would have preferred that be the prevailing opinion on xo before wasting my time watching it, as opposed to going in thinking i would be watching a smart film because of xo 2016

I liked the book (I actually love everything written by Michael Lewis), but I don't get why this was made into a movie. The book is very entertaining and accessible, and it didn't seem like an easy story to adapt to movie format.
