Having said that, I have taken a lot of shit for defending Joe Paterno in this entire saga. The people who want to tar and feather him seem to think that that because he didn't personally investigate Sandusky and find out that he was a pedo, then Paterno was complicit. That's idiotic. Paterno is a football coach, not a cop. He reported the alleged abuse to his boss, which is exactly what anyone is supposed to do in that situation. If he did anything wrong, it was that he didn't call the cops based on a secondhand report that a longtime friend did something weird in the shower. If someone told one of my friends that I was a pedo, I would hope that the friend would do a little due diligence before calling the cops immediately. And that's what Paterno did: he told his boss, because he didn't want to call the cops based on a secondhand rumor but also didn't want to launch an investigation himself. Which was exactly what any kind of decent person would have done in that situation. |
