lol wtf?

there's a huge transit black hole between the north side (lincoln park, lakeview, uptown) and the nice parts of the northwest side (bucktown, logan square, irving park). I have no idea why he wouldn't build something there.

It takes 42 minutes on the blue line best case scenario vs. estimated 12 minutes using the new tunnel. Huge difference in QOL. You would never have to think about whether to Uber vs. train. Basically as good as a downtown airport.

Correct, the blue line does it in about 40 minutes, this should be substantially less.

Musk is supposed to be bankrolling the whole thing himself as a test case for his tunneling tech.

This is an idiotic take. The issue with construction is it is a risky, low-margin business so there is no money for R&D. And it is really political and legal issues (obtaining ROW, fighting interest group lawsuits, and greasing the wheel politically) holding things up.

Chicago for some reason has been obsessed with an express train to/from O'Hare. They lately tried to trick private investors to build it and let them keep the proceeds. It will never, ever make a profit. The train ridership from O'hare to downtown is a lot lower than you'd think.

That's the whole point. Simply use smaller tunnels that can be dug 10x faster and potentially 100x cheaper. And then spend some of the savings on the car transport platforms that are automated so they can run 2x-3x the normal flow of traffic.

The Blue Line is running at maximum capacity (trains/hour) during rush hour and the train cars are packed like boxes of sardines. And they are still building new condos along it.

30 minutes is a lot. 80,000 take the blue line from ORD now. Probably at least 2-3x that if you include the taxis and Uber. 200,000 people per day = 100,000 man-hours * $20/hr = $2M per day saved.

Plus you reduce a lot of Uber traffic on I90.

Anyway, the point is it's all private funding, so why the hell not. If Elon can't turn a profit, who cares. Not sure why anyone would oppose it.

Why don't employees count?

Anyway, this is where I saw the 80k:

“The Blue Line is seeing unprecedented investment,” said CTA spokesman Brian Steele. The Blue Line is the service’s second busiest line, after the Red Line, and the branch between downtown and O’Hare sees more than 80,000 riders on an average weekday.
