I have been in a tumultuous relationship with a girl with BPD for a couple years. She used to abuse heroin, benzos, and cocaine on a regular basis, and it turned her into a monster. She was physically violent with me on several occasions. (And she would often do it in public and start screaming that I had hurt her knowing that most likely the cops would arrest me without asking any questions when they heard her cries.) One time she kicked out the windshield on my car after I told her that one of her rental applications had been denied. And one time she went completely psychotic and called the cops several nights in a row because she said that there were girls in our house trying to fuck me. (There were no girls in the house. She said she was hallucinating.)
But since she quit drugs, she's infinitely better. I wouldn't go so far as to say that she's "normal" now; she still has major abandonment issues and she can still go from "cheerful and happy" to "complete meltdown" in 30 seconds if she gets some upsetting news. But she's not significantly worse than most other girls I have dated. However, she tried really hard to change. Aside from extensive substance abuse treatment, she did both individual and group DBT therapy for a long time.
TLDR: If your wife is getting help, this is not a hopeless situation at all. BPD is actually one of the more treatable mental health issues if the patient is compliant with treatment. But if she refuses to get help, then there is almost certainly no hope. You need legal advice that I am not qualified to give.

She was always a little wacky, but once the baby was born she went straight into alternating psychotic and manic states. She'd leave him with the baby for weeks at a time and got involved in BDSM and group sex. She finally stabilized and came home and apologized, but a week later, he came home from grad school and found her fucking three dudes in their bed. He kicked her out and filed for divorce and she ended up OD'ing (to death) within a year. He was stuck raising his autistic kid by himself.
