Explain the most prole, raunchy game ever? Nintendo went places with the N64 that they've never gone before or since.

it’s over-the-top raunchiness could be interpreted as an elite aloofness to the mores of the day. like william randolph hearst using paper napkins. or alternatively as a knowing wink at its likely reception, evincing a self-awareness not typically displayed by purebred boors.

You aren't wrong, but it also reeks of desperation, not to mention basically no one cared about the N64 after turn turn of the millennium, it's insane how dead it was while PS1 was still peaking. There is an irony to it imo, or a bit of realization that if they made another DK64, people would trash it so they went another way.

At the same time, could there be CBFD if there weren't a litany of Scumbag titles paving the way like Turok, War Gods, Duke Nukem, wrestling et al? CBFD is like the N64's Scumbag magnum opus. It's a merging of the console's two preeminent genres - cute platformers & Scummy violent shit.

all great points. i believe i may need to revisit my assumptions about cbfd, along with, more importantly, my underlying conceptions about the interplay between socioeconomic class and consumer marketing.

Tellingly, Conker isn't even one of the top 45 best-selling N64 titles. He was in Diddy Kong Racing but that wasn't enough to give him name recognition lmao. IOW, N64 fans didn't get the joke because, being Scumbags, they had no sense of irony.

Also it's off-topic but I stopped giving a fuck about video games at the exact turn of the millennium, anyone else? DK64 and FF8 were like a one-two punch of sheer boredom and genre fatigue. Perfect Dark also felt stale to some extent, even when new. PS2 did nothing to salvage this. Like I didn't even know about some of these 2000-2001 N64 games like Turok 3 or No Mercy until years later. This all has something to do with the time warp that we all went into on 9/9/99 which was somehow caused by the time-space continuum being ripped open with the bombing of the USS Cole.

The true Patrician lineage of gaming goes NES🠞SNES🠞PS1🠞PC 🠞*gap in space time*🠞Nintendo Switch imo. PC gaming really came into its own around the turn of the millennium imho. It was good to dabble in the other consoles here and there but this is the main line of succession. Consoles were good for a few games here and there and the newer consoles are good for Netflix/HBO. But in the early 2000s, you had Diablo 2, Half-Life, Starcraft, MMOs coming around, FPSs with online, I mean it was something different. Discuss.

DK64 was a really good game IMO - it just didn't get a lot of love for being super solid and having a lot of nuance - it was fun, atmospheric and friendly to different ages of players.

CBFD on the other hand was one of the best games on N64 - probably the last "great game" of the system. OOT was obviously GOAT on N64, but CBFD was really up there - both the story mode and the versus mode were incredibly well done.

That said, it was a neglected masterpiece but it also represented the coming of age for a specific generation of people. As a kid in grade school you would get N64 and play Banjo Kazooie and maybe even have played a conker game on Gameboy (I never did I don't think).

By the time you were ready to go to high school, CBFD came out and inaugurated a new chapter in your adolescence as you became less of an innocent kid.

As I replayed the game when I got older (maybe board one time in senior year of high school or early college) - you also begin to resonate with the adult themes way more and how Conker can't get his love back despite all his money and power. It's a pretty major theme to learn from.

DK64, you can keep it. Super Mario 64 invented the 3D platformer, Banjo evolved and improved it in some ways. And.... that's enough. This is like the most common opinion in the world. Everyone 'felt' it. Banjo-Tooie sold a small af fraction of Kazooie's figures.

Game kinda sucks playing it now. Lots of boring, overlong, not-that-funny cut scenes. Puzzles and combat are annoying and more difficult than they need to be. I guess you really can’t go home again.

I felt this way way back when DK64 and Perfect Dark came out. N64 had a very short heyday that culminated with OOT and then everything after that felt underwhelming. It never achieved the intellectual highs of ps1 and its library is therefore vacuous imo
