Iceland’s minister for children and education, Ásthildur Lóa Thórsdóttir, has left her position after admitting she had a child with a teenager over three and a half decades ago, according to media in Iceland.

Iceland’s public broadcaster RUV reported on Thursday that the minister had a relationship with a 15-year-old boy when she was 22, and had a son with him.

According to the Icelandic broadcaster, she met the boy while working as a counsellor for a religious group and gave birth to his child when she was 23 and he was 16.

In Iceland, the age of consent is 15 but it is illegal for adults to have sexual relationships with a child under 18 if they are teaching them and in a position of trust, and those who cross this line can face up to 12 years in prison.

While the father of the child reportedly said he had never seen himself as a victim in this situation, he did say he was in a difficult place in his life at the time of the relationship and had turned to the church group for support.

After being cut off, the father sought assistance from the Ministry of Justice and the church’s family service to gain rights to see his child, but he was refused visitation rights by Thórsdóttir, according to Iceland’s public broadcaster.

Thórsdóttir resigned not long after the report was made public, the public broadcaster said but will continue to represent the People’s Party as a member of parliament.

Iceland’s prime minister said Thórsdóttir had met with the country’s three party leaders, but she had decided to resign, according to RUV.

Colleen Hermesmann was a 16-year-old babysitter who in 1987 was hired to take care of 12-year-old Shane Seyer. The two began a sexual relationship, and when Hermesmann was 17 and Seyer was 13, the former became pregnant. The baby, a daughter, was born in 1989. Criminal charges were brought against Hermesmann by Shawnee County, Kansas, accusing her of "engaging in the act of sexual intercourse with a child under sixteen". Hermesmann ultimately took a plea bargain, pleading guilty to the lesser offense of "contributing to a child's misconduct".[1]

In 1991, the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, in Hermesmann's name, took Seyer to court seeking child support. Hermesmann's criminal culpability was not addressed in this trial, as this was purely a civil court case. The Department also sought and was awarded $7,000, equivalent to $16,200 in 2024,[4] for its own costs.[5] However, in the later Supreme Court hearing, the Department stated it never had any intention of collecting its award.[6]
