Someone I’ve known for a long time, a Trump populist type, nice guy, says he is now “blackpilled.” I told him more or less “that was four years ago, bro - the blackpill is just the start of the journey, the question is what do you do with the blackpill that matters.” He didn’t respond (because he can’t).

Part of the declining engagement on Substack generally is due to ratcheting censorship, sure, and part of it is due to ubiquitous AI slop which has really denigrated the value of the written word, but part of it is that people are sick of analysis and want answers. I know that I’m down to reading only a very few bloggers personally, and most of what I read I skim through. People havn’t done the internal work necessary for the next steps. The truth is that we are heading into a much poorer world with a lot less personal freedom, nothing will stop it at this point, and the only thing now to do is soul work (and sure, prep food storage, become friends with locals, try to gain resilience etc). The question is how does one become mentally and spiritually more resilient in a world where the enlightenment is over, the industrial revolution and cheap goods are over, and we are heading into neoliberal feudal Hell? What kind of God image is relevant and resonant in such a situation (certainly not an all good, all loving God)? How does one determine truth from lies in this environment?

These are the tough questions, and no one can do the work for you. This is much tougher stuff than Current Thing hysteria engagement farming, it requires sitting with deep discomfort for extended periods, with deep uncertainty, with staring into the void, without any expectation of return. And this is even tougher because the West is utterly materialist and secular and those who have done the work in the past are all dead, there are no guides, it has to be rediscovered anew…
