I finally got around to watching Richard Jewell (2019), directed by Clint Eastwood at the astonishing age of 89. The film tells the story of the eponymous security guard who saved a lot of lives during the 1996 Centennial Park bombing when he saw a suspicious backpack and evacuated people from the area. The FBI tried hard to frame Jewell as the bomber as he was obese, poor, and a white male - an easy target. Eventually he was exonerated but his reputation was in tatters even though he was a hero. It was interesting watching Jewell’s character transformation as a guy who worships law enforcement to a guy who still likes it but sees much more clearly its darker underbelly.

The film is not really an easy watch, but Eastwood does a great job as the director and the actor who plays both Jewell (Paul Walter Hauser) and his lawyer (Sam Rockwell) give great performances. Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde give serviceable performances. The film was a box office flop because the American public is entitled, lazy, and stupid, preferring to get lost in the clouds of capeshit.

I do think it qualifies as a dissident film as it shows the FBI as a manipulative, predatory organization.

In real life Jewell sued many organizations that slandered his reputation and won large but confidential settlements. He became a police officer but died at the age of 44 from complications from his obesity.

Good summary. Cathy Bates was also great as his mother.

I liked the film but agreed that it's not easy to watch

The FBI has never done anything good, ever. If it were abolished tomorrow crime rates would probably go down.
