A lot of important scenes and characterization gets skipped over, but you don't need to see it if you already know the characters and plot, and it's nice to have the widescreen aspect ratio and better visual fidelity.
Then they deviate from the original plot in the third and fourth movies and the whole thing goes off the fucking rails. A bunch of new, zero-charisma characters introduced with no development, incoherent plot, very poor pacing, terrible soundtrack choices at several key moments.
They sanitized out the hardest-hitting scenes (Shinji jerking off on an unconscious Asuka, and Misato offering to fuck him before the final battle). The whole thing is basically uncontroversial g-rated slop now. |
