Yeah exactly.
I was just never able to get the tone I wanted from the J bass. It never sounded quite right. Supposedly you can get some Jaco tones out of the bridge pickup. But I don't play a lot of funk? So it was like who cares. The other J bass heroes are John Paul Jones and I feel like his rig from the 70s is just esoteric and rare like I couldn't find any of his gear in reality. The only other J bass hero I had was Flea and you have to go all in on a Gallien-Krueger rig to pull it off. You have to have matching cabinets and shit. It's just too much.
I plugged in the P bass and it sounded like 90% of the tones on every record I ever cared about. Now the J is like some odd flavor you use sometimes to mix things up.
