speedruns in general are impressive because they require absolute precision in physical execution. success is measured in pixles. an rpg speedrun is much different, it's all about planning. you need to figure out the most efficient way to get the minimum experience, items and weaponry you need - and no more! - in order to survive the bosses. you need an encyclopedic knowledge of all the enemies in order to pull it off. your player setups and fight orders have to be dialed in. so there's a ton of recon going on over all of the possibilities. and then it takes 5-6 hours to actually do it. seems that they allow autosaves because you can always get wiped out by chance every so often, and in many cases they know the exact odds and plan on taking a couple quick Ls. ten years ago 6-7 hours was the top. current record time is 4:59 and he admits totally blowing about a minute. it seems they've figured out the perfect strategy and now it's coming down to step counts and minimal clicks to reequip, like any other speedrun.

also it's completely insane and pathetic that young men are spending their lives doing this.

jesus it's crazier than i thought. at the start of the world of ruin, when cid is dying, the top guys do a save and restart...
The Solution: Saving and resetting forces the game's internal encounter/RNG seed back to a known, 100% predictable state. By following exact frame-perfect movement inputs after reloading, runners can guarantee that the fastest fish spawn every single time, allowing them to fully heal Cid in just 4 quick cycles with zero time wasted.
how the fuck did someone figure this out? and that's just one moment in a 5 hour run. there are dozens of tricks like this.
top three runs are separated by 45 seconds.

you can play for 5 hours and miss the record over a chance run-in with doom gaze.
you have to buy and sell items as fast as possible, but if you accidentally buy the wrong kind of rod at 4 hours and 30 minutes you are DONE HERE.
if a random spell hits you and you take an L at 4 hours and 45 minutes, you're done.
it looks like the last 10 minutes are very much down to chance.
