It's even more ludicrous when you realize Christians included, as canon, Jewish texts that jews never thought were canon. Imagine Mike Huckabee quoting Maccabees to room full of Israeli Jews.

But more to the point why include it at all if you're only going to quote isolated snippets with even trying to understand their context? Christian theologians just mined the OT for quotes they thought were useful and were just like "wtf?" when it came to the other 99%. Erasmus had an uneasy relationship with it

isn't 50% of it just an inventory of Jewish names? I enjoyed the Charlton Heston Films regardless imo.

The problem is what happens if you actually sit down and read it while trying to carry the Jesus story in your head? Martin Luther was really kind of a bitch about this because he learned Hebrew and could have offered critical commentary, but chose not to

Your critique of Christian authors selectively quoting the Hebrew Bible is valid, but Jews have done the same thing, and Jesus did too. Saint Augustine argued that God, the ultimate author of scripture, could have chosen the same words to mean infinitely many things, so fanciful interpretations and even quotations out of context are fine, according to him, if they serve to establish and elucidate Christian teaching. As for the Old Testament itself, you need the Old Testament to explain why Christ was born a Jew and ministered first to other Jews, and you need the Old Testament to explain the concept of the Messiah.

That's easy to disprove, because if it were necessary to know all those details about Jesus' background, it should have been equally necessary that we know who tf John the Baptist was. For some reason, people who wrote the Bible thought John the Baptist was a Big Fucking Deal, yet we know nothing about him and it doesn't matter

John the Baptist was probably another messiah-claimant whose ministry merged with Jesus' at some point, possibly after he was executed.

Some people think he was bigger than Jesus during Jesus' entire lifetime, and that Jesus in his own lifetime was invoking John to prove his credentials. Some people think it wasn't until some time later that Jesus was understood to have been a greater figure then John the Baptist. Maybe John the Baptist and his followers had to get old and die before anyone could put Jesus in the #1 spot

Marcion of Sinope created the first bible. he included only the New Testament as he preached the OT god was a demiurge not worthy of praise. the judaizers convinced the church to excommunicate him. he preached jesus was not jewish.

The historical Jesus would have been more like an Old Testament prophet with pressing warning about the coming end times (his first words spoken in the Bible being "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!"). It's the best way to interpret his ministry.

You have the mikveh cleansing in some Jewish practices but the implications of that vs clean running water are quite different

Personally the whole mikveh thing always seemed barbaric and very racially charged to me. Which is fine! But then don't lecture others on their own racial preferences or what have you.
