Well, I don't know that it's the most informed critique of global power that I have ever heard--I mean, to the extent that I understand it at all, it seems to me to just contain elementary banalities. So, for example, with it is true that the erstwhile G8 was the G6 in the 1970s, and while it is true that most of the attendees had to fly to get there, I don't think that that in itself is really an adequate explanation of anything at all. Take Israel for example. While Israel was nominally not a part of the initial G6 summit, the future no-fly zones that Israel would later come to support, for example, were certainly prefigured by the US ambassador's comments in the G6 summit. I mean you can read the documents yourself, I've cited them for anyone who's interested. In fact, I think it was in December of 1975, actually, that the New York Times referenced Israel's preoccupation with what it called the 'growing threat' of what was functionally commercial Arab airspace--the same commercial airspace, by the way, that the US essentially secured for itself through a series of negotiated easements in central and south America, despite a variety of strenuous protests and deep public antipathy in Nicaragua. This is what we call economic development. Okay, so, this goes on right up through the early 90s.

Here’s GPT-4’s take. (it’s so over)
Chapter 17: Flying Like a G6 - Unpacking Power Dynamics in a Techno-Cultural Landscape
The contemporary world, in its complexity and interconnectedness, presents phenomena that once dissected, can reveal underlying systems of power and control. Today, let's reflect upon a cultural artifact that seems, at first glance, quite incongruous with our usual academic discourse: the 2010 hit song "Like a G6" by Far East Movement.
Upon hearing the refrain, "Fly like a G6," one may be led to the simple interpretation of a desire for opulence, encapsulated by the Gulfstream G650, a private jet recognized as a symbol of wealth and exclusivity. However, it is the implications of this sentiment that warrant deeper analysis.
In its lyrics, "Like a G6" promotes the unattainable standard of living emblematic of the elite class. This "fly" lifestyle is a product of capitalistic structures, where the accumulation of wealth is fetishized, inevitably creating socio-economic disparities. The song encapsulates this with its unabashed celebration of excess and extravagance, yet ironically, it is consumed and celebrated by the masses, many of whom are victims of the very system it glorifies.
The "G6" is a metaphorical vehicle, symbolizing a mechanism of transport to an elevated societal position, seemingly accessible only through material gain. This can be interpreted as the embodiment of a neoliberal ideal, where the relentless pursuit of wealth is not just encouraged but seen as an individual's moral duty. The implication here is deeply troubling, as it normalizes and masks the vast economic inequities within our global society.
Further, the song's popularity and widespread dissemination highlight the role of media in perpetuating these ideals. The music industry, a microcosm of larger capitalist systems, markets such content as aspirational, hence shaping the social consciousness and directing public desire towards material wealth and the illusion of upward mobility. Thus, they cement the ruling class's power by making the populace complicit in their own subjugation.
The purpose of this chapter, then, is not to deride pop culture, but rather to recognize and critique the narratives it propagates. Like any cultural artifact, "Like a G6" is not merely entertainment, but a lens through which we can examine the systemic forces at play. The unbridled pursuit of wealth, while outwardly glamourous, often obscures the critical discussion of economic disparity, the ethical implications of excessive consumption, and the undue influence of power structures in shaping public perception.
As we listen to the refrains of "Fly like a G6," we must question: Who has the means to fly, and who is grounded by the weight of inequality? Such reflection allows us to challenge our understanding of wealth, power, and the mechanisms that perpetuate their imbalances. Only then can we envision a world that soars beyond the confines of a G6, propelled by equality, empathy, and sustainable prosperity.
